More on Libel Legislation
OK, first up we have a response to the email I sent to my MP.
Dear James
Thank you for your email.
As you will know the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee on which I serve is currently conducting an inquiry into this issue and if you have followed our proceedings you will have seen that I have made clear in those meetings my support for the US libel laws which I hope reassures you about this.
However I fear that the majority of my committee members disagree, but all will be revealed when we finalise our report which I hope you will be interested to read.
Best wishes
Well, it’s good to learn that my MP no longer holds the view that our libel laws are “about right”, but seems now to think that the American system is one that would serve us well in this country. Secondly, it is worth noting that the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee is currently conducting an inquiry into this issue – now would seem to be a good time to write to your MP. Especially if they are on the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee (members listed on the linked webpage).
Also: in a comment on my previous post on the libel laws in this country, a link was posted to a No 10 petition. I urge you to sign it. [You may also wish to add it to delicious – or perhaps digg it. Or maybe give it a tweet.]
[digg this post.]
EDIT: Le Canard Noir has now blogged on our blatantly unjust set of laws.
